paradise by Vivienne GrantHow many conversations must I conduct
With people I have only just met
And repeat the same inanities
About
The place we live in
And how we got here
And why we came here
And how beautiful it is
And how many times must I nod
Looking enraptured
When I hear the same sentence
I have heard
A thousand million times
Oh! This is paradise!
How many times must I bite my tongue
And refrain from saying
What it is I want to scream
In those ears
Shout at those beatific faces
And tell the truth about
Living in paradise!
How many people must I impress
With my ability to be an attentive hostess
And with my seemingly infinite knowledge
About this little slice of Paradise
When all the while
I am thinking
How mind-numbingly
Repetitive it all is
And wishing like hell I could leave
This paradise.

Posted by George Hoerner on 02/23/12 at 01:02 AM Sometimes the newness of a place will make it more exciting or beautiful, etc... than it is to people who have lived there for so long they forget what a place really has to offer. A place can be taken for granted until one leaves and realizes what they have really lost. Still a good write. |
Posted by Anya Kaats on 02/23/12 at 01:21 AM so honest. i so can relate to this. just makes you want to crawl into a hole and stay there for a while. |
Posted by Ken Harnisch on 02/23/12 at 11:05 AM While not living in "paradise" myself, I do very much understand how difficult it is to hold one's tongue while trading inanities with harmless people about subjects I know neither of us gives a fig about...wonderful, wonderful bite to this poem, Vivienne! |
