farewell erstwhile lover

by Vikki Owens

sign on this line,
the lawyers issue ultimatums,
the relationship is irretrievably broken.
after 3 years of separation
the signing is little more than a sigh.
i have cried all i can cry,
i have turned over every emotion,
relived every word
until all the memories have ground down
to dust
like shattered teeth.
i thought it would be more momentous,
worth more mentioning
to say i am finally released.
sad how 10 years is dissolved with not even
a phone call, not even a shaking hand,
just a ball point pen and a stamp,
and our wedding day crumbles and fades away.
i am not happy, i am not devastated,
i am simply free.

A farewell of considerable talent. Awesome.

You just decsribed my divorce. I did not cry at the time. It was surreal. I was numb. This is a great write.

Wow. This is awesome and what I've heard most of my friends say about their divorces.

"until all the memories have ground down to dust like shattered teeth" I feel that line right down to the core of me.
