Over a Steaming Cup of Something

by Ken Harnisch

Let’s make love
Or if the time is inconvenient
We can have coffee instead

There was a day, after all,
When you swore my whispered
Intimations brought flush to your
Cheeks and a haste to end the
Innocence to which we clung too long

You wanted to be seduced by Robert Browning
And to the best of my ability, I complied
Not as sure of my romantic prowess
Or poetry as my desire for the prize

I still stand in awe of you. There is
About you, love, an aura, a physical presence
Yes, but beyond that a spirit I wanted
Not so much to conquer, but to absorb

Like most men, I fumble with all
Attempts to understand why
The moth is attracted to the flame;
Why brain cannot overcome
The heart when under the
Assault of love, or its equivalent

So I am willing to sit down
In the same café and over a
Steaming cup of something
Attempt once more to seduce
While I deduce why you mean
So much to me.

I know you like the fact
I try so hard, which is why
We will wind up in heated congress
At some point tonight. It’s either that
Or you miss the coffee and the conversation
More than my foggy lusts will ever
Comprehend.

It must the little babe with bow, arrow, and quiver who is out and about. Very nicely done Ken.

That opening line points right down to the road to the possibility of a great story, and we are certainly not disappointed.

I don't think there's an adequate word in the English language that describes that desire to absorb or be absorbed by our love(r). We need to make one up :) I loved the intensity of this, Ken, right down to the last word!
