origami heart

by Maria Francesca

she has intentions like a pretzel
she has an origami heart
and she has eyes the size
of a senator's lies
that can put your world together
and then blow it all apart

she makes a feast of toast and water
she makes a word a work of art
and no one knows how she flows
or why the air around her glows
but
she has this origami heart

and you wonder at her beauty
and you wonder at her grace
as you watch her rise above you
with redemption on her face

and you wish that you could touch her
and you wish she'd meet your eyes
but you can't make gold of straw
no matter how you fantasize

and

you know you'll never even tempt her
you know you're through before you start
but you know you're gonna try
sure as birds are gonna fly
to get inside her origami heart
