Bygones

by Jim Moore

In a parallel universe things might have been different,
But this cluster of instants roared by
Like the heavy breath of a locomotive.

It’s how the world must have been then,
The clamor of bells
And the shimmer of sky
Folding time up neatly—
A box topped with a bow for all to see.
