no one likes to see a pretty girl cry

by Cassandra Leigh

"it's like her tears are the blood of angels and it hurts my heart,"
he said, half in jest, and it's
statements like that which make me want to
shoot myself

according to george oppen, i have
'chosen the meaning
of being numerous'...where are the rest of
these numerous when i
can't breathe on the driveway
at 2am for dry-sobbing
into the grass

i can't even write right now, i haven't in weeks, but
here i am anyway, because
i am paralyzed the clear
window that used to be these poems is
painted over to keep the
morning light out

i am obsessed with
where he is right now, with whom, doing what
and all i can think is how
he is so relieved not to be
wondering the same thing
about me

having stood once or twice on the other side of that great divide I know exactly how this feels...great job Cassandra!

Your title and last stanza blew me away. I've been the pretty girl crying AND the person watching her cry, so this hit me twice as hard. Smooth.

The whole poem is striking, but the third stanza is what hits closest to home right this moment. But the fourth stanza brings back some vivid memories. Anyway, and excellent poem all around. Congrats on POTD!
