World Without Words

by Alison McKenzie

In that irregular absence of
Verbal expression,
Various body parts
Fill in the gap
So that meaning
Is never, truly, lost.

Eyes smile
In stories told -
Heartbreak and triumph,
Grief and faith,
And most of all, hope.

Hands express love,
Speak in measures
Of gratitude, wonder,
Hunger and asylum.

Vocal chords hum
In the gentle
Shades of sigh,
Laughter, wist
And surprise.

There are those moments
When words are both
Too scarce
To adequately cover
All these questions;
Yet excessive enough,
For the answers to be lost
In the fray.

Author's Note: This isn't EXACTLY what I want to say, but it's the beginning of my understanding of a world without words.

Intriguing. A challenge to express in words what it feels to express without them.

It is a good start Alison. Keep working it through.

This is great! Though you may also find that we cannot reproduce our thoughts entirely in words. That is one of the good-graces of poetry, beyond the "words" we can entreat paradoxes, metaphoric structures and other devices that build an atmosphere, or environment, if you will, that carries further the "collected" definition of our words. Delighted. Thanks.
