Captivated

by Jeffrey Parren

Unlike a cat
mesmerized
by a ball
bouncing from
a rubber string

I am captivated
by little.

The simple things
have far worn
their welcome.

Deep thought
is my siren.

From brushing my teeth
to making a Caesar salad
and
from shampooing my hair
to foaming milk at work

I'm lost in thoughts
pertaining to nothing
and everything.

My spiel at work
has become new again
and yet
still I get lost.

Not in the words.
Not in the images.
Not in the description.

The repetition
lulls me.

Instead of releasing
all that stress of life
the thinking
multiplies like flies
in standing water.

I get lost.

Rarely do I find the way.

Captivated by nothing
and everything
all at once.
