No Middle Ground

by Jeffrey Parren

There is
no middle ground
anymore.

Either the temptation
is overwhelming
or the staggering
uneventfulness
of it all
is plain depressing.

Only my morality
outweighs
the enticing nature
of the possible
grandeur.

I'm left wondering
what it must be like
to be the king
without reservations
or guilt.

To be the master
of my kingdom
and all that I rule.

But, alas,
I am but the court
jester.

All laughs.

No spoils.

Reminds me of the court jester from "King Lear" (and I suppose Kurosawa's "Ran" as well). Dug this a whole hell of a lot, man.
