Reminiscent is My DNA

by Jeffrey Parren

The sharp memories
are saved in the recesses.

During reminiscent times
experiences of the past
cut my current self.

Times spent
when things were easier
(or at least
I see them now
as such)
dig into
what seem to be
difficult times.

Experiences learn us all,
though jagged and jaded
some become.

I must not regret
the decisions of the past
because they are
now my DNA.

If only it were so easy
as etching a line
into my skin
and allowing
the blood of my past
to flow out
enabling me
to hit the erase button
of my mind
while still holding onto
the knowledge of experience.

If only.
