Only a Dot by Jody PrattIt's only a dot,
no dimensions or thought.
No weight or mass, not cold nor hot.
Just a dot, floating infinitely.
Its neighbors are just dots;
floating endlessly.
Seemingly insignificant specks
of never was and never will be.
Individually they stand apart,
great distances divide, yet
they dance as a singularity,
no feelings of pride.
From a distant observers eye
they are one, together, a single
piece of pie.
Too small to see,
yet here they are.
Never together never too far.
They build up, so many. So many
they are quantum.
A quantum unto itself is hopeless
to be anything more than useless,
yet it is an infinite number of dots;
perpetuating, without thought.
Neighbors so, so
very, very far apart... but
from a distant observers view,
they are not askew. So many together,
they create a nucleus.
A useless nucleus; it does nothing.
Alone it can never hope to achieve but,
it becomes something.
Far off in its distant orbit
other quantum’s have grouped to form it.
An infinite number of dots within dots.
All these dots dance into an atom,
and they are powerful; and they are united.
They are mighty dots.
What is this? They have friends,
or far off distant cousins.
The ancestral dots of another
entire quantum Universe; another atoms birth.
And so it begins,
one, two, three to the power of four-hundred and seventy-eight trillion trillion trillions.
Before we know it, this orbit;
these dots have formed an apple.
How fitting that it would fall
upon a man's head.
“Ouch.” He whines,
but he is only a dot. 11/29/2011 Author's Note: Broken down to its smallest parts scientists believe everything in the entire Universe, both matter and energy, are made up of one-dimensional dots separated by great distances (from the perspective of such dots). The poem explains a little more about this fascinating (and plausible) theory.
