brave new world

by Angela Thomas

we just piled into my best friends car
on the way to an out-of-the-way animal
sanctuary in maryland for what will be my
thanksgiving dinner this year. her father

got into the backseat admist the empty
coffee cups and last year's term papers,
exclaiming that it shouldn't be that hard
to throw these things out. her mother

commented the somewhat sporadic use
of the brakes going downhill, gripping
the side door for safety. my friend strangled
the steering wheel and gritted her teeth

with irritation. i felt my throat drop into my chest,
a queasy uneasy stomach churn. tears fighting
the crease of my eyes for release. here i was,
an orphan in familiar familial territory.
