Cutting deep

by Sal Haefling

she reaches her hand to the windowsill
to pick up the diluted peppermint oil
the floor is covered in shards of glass
her toes start to bleed as she walks upon
the traumas of her past

the bleeding drips onto the carpet as she
makes her way into the bedroom
she stares at the deep red angles cutting
inside of her skin

blood makes her realize she is alive
she is free and feels a sense of
ease
while she makes her way back to the shards
of glass that lay upon the kitchen floor

Now I can't get Annie Lennox's "Walking on Broken Glass" out of my head.
