Last Exit

by Erik Jensen

Terminal velocity – the speed at which we are currently moving
Given gravity, wind resistance, our relative understanding of mountain time
And the aerodynamics of my wavering determination.
I can go no faster, honey, because God ordained it when he
Drew up his constants on a cloud whiteboard and said it was good.
There’s only so much I can manipulate into serving my purposes –
there’s some justice in the universe after all.

When I think of physics, I think of sunny days and red balls with
Cubes surrounding them to explain mass and Einstein’s tenets.
Unknown things push them. I can’t help seeing those cubes are around us postulating our behavior
In a hypothetical word beyond us where the weak forces are our ability to communicate
And, unbeknownst to them, the ridges and deer variables are actual resistance.

I wonder what the scientists have named us and the car – are we collectively object A?
Can’t you see it like a question on a paper in a chem lab? If Object A, given Existential Crisis B,
Is moving at Velocity C when will it reach Point D? Can they show their work?

Here’s where I become unknown variable E – let’s derail the whole thing like a runaway train.
Two miles ahead is our last chance – can you follow the logic like I can?
We’ll change course on to that final exit before the roads merge and head into
Some space beyond the cubes and kiss like we did before scientific study could
Explain our clockwork, heart beats and need to breathe.
We’ll break lightspeed as we go down the ramp.

...boy, erik i like this; the subject matter[pun intended]and your handling the the wordage...smartness exudes and you [wonderfully] dance on the floor of existentialism and the edge of understanding. a great piece of -ness.

Extraneous variables, masquerading as IV readers, can only gape in wonder at this theoretical body that actually works in practice -- we're in the cue for significance :>
