Miles and Miles

by Meghan Helmich

I keep you in my wallet
to show to everyone when they ask
me if I've ever met love.
Why no, I haven't met love.
But I've spoken to him quite a few times.

Writing poems about you has not gotten easier.
I still grapple with our fingers folded together
to see who has the stronger grip.
I always win because you are forgiving
and patient and kind

even though you tell anyone who will listen
that you are nothing
but a hound dog.
