Trouble in River City

by E. A. Pugh

you think you smarter but
you lips don’t flow
open
in the current
you teeth
don’t chill
wit da
flowen rapid

yous think I cheat
cuz I aint got the learnen book
but I can spin a rhyme anytime
just for the flow of it
words are not
cheep they are
Free

misses somebody with your birthday car
driven around sorority style
I got duck tape on my feet
loose
slinky
alone
cuz u up dare
wit your edumacation don’t mean nothing to us out here on the streets or in the feild
we da tromplen men and woman
trompleled
worken

if I had your diploma
and your freedom to not be cliché’
id make me a edumacated spot of tea
I aint never got those books
too pricey for me
an as far as freedom of edumacation
I aint never got no one to sit and read wit me

I learned my lesson

From looking with my eyes wide open
Into the current
of da creek
lips wide
smiling as mountain water washed my teeth

Glory be
aint no one gunna judge me
sep myself
anthe good lord above.
