When Everyone Got Paid

by JJ Johnson

We've got this economy that sucks more than corner whores
Taxes collected don't add up to the garbage on our shores
There's more blow jobs per hour than jobs employers can hand out
If disease was not a problem, I might self-employ and put some out

So why not pay for bridges to get fixed legally on our knees
When the owner of the body is the one who holds the keys?
Health care all for free to make it safe for both rich and poor
No more pimps or madams in control of the revolving door

Politicians would not need to keep secret their dirty secret lives
Well, at least they'd only have to keep them secret from their wives
I am willing to bet there would be so much money to be made
I could lose the bet and still have plenty left to go get laid

Fewer criminals saves the cost to incarcerate so many Johns
While those enslaved for sex would be free to become moms
The end of auctioning bodies to start bidding on E-Bay
When the lady of the evening can finally keep her pay

Where do hookers disappear when they become too old
Is Jesus there that fateful day to save what they have sold?
And who could throw a stone on another fateful day
When Jesus told the sinners to look inside and walk away?

Author's Note: OK, so you think I've lost my mind, but really, I wrote this for a poetry contest on another site ( http://deepundergroundpoetry.com/forum/competitions/read/1275/ ) that was to write two poems about "Sex-Workers", one pro and one con. If you choose to go there and read poems posted there, be forewarned that some of the content is explicit. Sex-Worker is an interesting title for a job considering some of the names it already has. Well, this was my pro-poem. I decided to use my poem "Where Are You Going? I've Seen Where You've Been!" as my con poem, even though I didn't write it for the contest and isn't technically about prostitution. I'm not trying to win the contest, just found it an interesting topic that came up right after I had posted "Un-stately Swans", which is about hookers on the corner near a previous apartment I lived in for 10 years. I'm not so much an advocate for legalizing prostitution, but I do think it could be if it were regulated, taxed and everyone participating had to have regular medical check ups, all paid for by taxes on the business. Something that concerns me tremendously is the sex-slave business that is growing rapidly here in America. Aside from all the taxes and reduction in health/disease issues, it would make a huge impact on the cost of incarcerating both the Johns and the hookers, while eliminating the Pimps and Madams and slave owners. Let's face it, this is the worlds oldest profession, it will never go away. It creates many problems for everyone involved. Drug testing for workers would go a long way towards cleaning up the real victims of the criminal side of this work. Drug rehab would be an industry unto itself. The temptation to pay for sex was right outside my door for ten years and I never bit, but after getting to know these girls to a small degree, I was often concerned when one would not be there all of the sudden. Did she quit? Did she get a regular job? Did she get kidnapped, killed or something else terrible? Maybe she got too old to make money for the pimp that owned her. Who knows what happens to hookers who get too old? There was never a way to find out, they were just gone. jj

Very interesting look at a taboo topic. Having a pro- and con-, playing devil's advocate, definitely a way to introspect and perhaps stretch our own thinking. The third stanza rings very true in my ears, thinking back to the numerous scandals in DC.
