be kind to dumb animals

by Charlie Morgan

Odie, beside me, holding down the floor.
splayed as he awaits the day to be his;

he gives up and his ears stop searching for sound;
ordered by his body, "lie down" it says.
as he rolls over gently to his side.

his eyes like Charon awaiting Dante and
his delivery of one more level of hell.

noises waken him, the throws lethargy away,
like a useless stick off a corny dog;
as quickly he's back to gather his Heaven.

his rolled-up banner close to his side;
it reads: IT'S A DOG'S WORLD. SO BE KIND
TO DUMB ANIMALS-START WITH YOUR OWNER.

the last stanza made me laugh out loud and startle my cat!
