The Little Things

by Jeffrey Parren

Upon birth
we humans are pure.

Unscathed
by the rigors
of this existence
we are born
in body and mind
as smooth beings.

It's not until
the real world
and it's players
both
fake and real
cause jagged edges
to appear
on the once innocent.

And it's true
these times aren't easy
so seeing some of
the exasperated ones
fire back is
sometimes surprisingly.

Ever more ironic
is that everyone talks
about the “little things.”

They make a big
difference because
it seems
that the way
this whole system
is designed
that the little things
are the only ones
we get to truly hold
for only short bursts.

I'd like to hope
that most of us
may be one step away
from total exasperation
but also one smaller step
away from utterly and
complete happiness
and that's why I still try.

...always the little things, jeff. as good a reason as any to keep doing what we do.
