September 29

by Meghan Helmich

A colorful man with a monacle
adjusted my medication today.
His hands juggled glass elephants
while he looked me in the eye

to remind me what it feels like to see morning,
taste a meal, and be in the bathroom
without eyeing the pastel razors in the tub.
As if he knew.

I told him that breathing is as death-defying
as I can manage these days
and he laughed like a calliope.

As my nurse wife says, "If you can't breath everything else is useless! Keep the airway open!". If this is as positive as you can be at least you are on the ‘write’ track. Keep it up lady.
