After Birth by JJ JohnsonWhen did you become so cold your breath hurt
Burning words left me face down in the dirt
And the smile you flashed exposed darker lies
Foreshadowing Hades depth on the rise
Was it your intention to mislead me
When you told me you loved my poetry?
Or did you mean that I should hit the road
And read my love poems far from your abode?
What's the point in going if you stay here
With no one to protect me from my fear?
Poised in the mirror posing as my muse
While the others all agree to refuse
Creeping darkness came to brighten the night
When I thought you inspired me to write
I needed to believe more than to know
The truth was, you just wanted me to go
Where could I go that's far enough away?
How long would be long enough, did you say?
Did you say my dog day would come along
Or did you mean I always had it wrong?
Nine months after reading at the cafe
An icy breeze passed under the doorway
Reborn soon after putting on the show
Cut the cord, now it's time for me to go
