a mile or so

by Vikki Owens

i put myself in your shoes
and found them incredibly
tight and acidic,
and embittered by demons
and the drudgeries of life
unable to find value
in anything without instant payoff.

i found them backwards
and spinning, endlessly left-footed
and sodden
sullen at perceived threats
to the boundries of the
social pariah.

(we do set ourselves in motion
and can only blame ourselves
for perpetuating our pain.)

i found them listless and wanting
and intolerably blind to the things you are given,
pathetic and causeless,
finding communion in the most irrelevant traits

what i account for their failings
makes the mile worth it.

I love that you took a common saying and turned it into this; super cool and nicely done.
