Song for Della

by Richard Vince

I saw you and forgot that
I don’t know you after all.
How many times have I
Thought that today?

The difference is that I am
One of the legion of people here
To know your name.

This is not really for you:
I just chose your name to
Represent all the familiar faces
Of unfamiliar people.

Every time, this is different.
I devolve from social butterfly
To social caterpillar to
Something like the me I was
When I was her age:
All eyes and no words.

I think I want to go back
To before I was any of those,
Before I let my memory
Overtake my mind;
To the time before
I knew your name.

Oh, to be held in such regard!
