somewhere a wolf howls, alerting
all: I AM. I AM HERE, HEAR ME ROAR!
she owns the world, starting at dawn
she postures a blurry image against
the pale orange sky, her black coat
reflects a poised tension of aggression;

her brood, a growing gape of open mouths;
her the artful hunter makes it a life's hunt,
as her life of devotion becomes centered
on the pups, their food, water, behaviour.

and somewhere there are men who greet the day
and have not even a mouse-peep to share.
