canyons

by Cassandra Leigh

and suddenly i looked at him,
and i actually saw him.
words, dropping from careless lips
soft and heavy
tore through me like thunder through an empty canyon.
i'm pierced through like a swallowtail,
the pin a keen mind--
slowly deflating, distilling to mere essence--
and for three days there has been venom in my blood.
like damming a river to flow into a chasm,
now sated, my starving spirit
infused with a dangerous addiction.

"my starving spirit infused with a dangerous addiction."--I really like that. Your sense of language and tone is perfect here.
