you thought I was kidding

by Maria Francesca

you thought I was kidding
when I said I adored you.
you thought I just said it
to fill empty air.
you didn't believe
there was no one before you
or trust that
wherever you went I'd be there.

you thought that I suffered
from infatuation.
you thought me too foolish
to know my own heart.
you had no real grasp
of my soul's situation --
that nothing
and no one
could keep us apart.

you thought I was silly
you thought me naive
you tried to discard me
like valueless junk -
but now you know better,
yes,
now you believe -
as you do all you can
to escape from my trunk.

you thought I was kidding
when I said I adored you
I'm sure you know now
that was all a mistake
and I'll miss your sweet voice
and I'll miss this old Ford
as it slowly and sadly
sinks into the lake.

I liked the playful, upbeat nature of this, as well as it's sad points that kept us grounded. Nicely done!

A wonderfully lyrical write about obsession and its own internal logic. I very much like this.

One of your best stories. You couldn't ask for a crisper, better ending.
