Charity

by Jeffrey Parren

Charity doesn't begin
with the first donation
of one's time or money
to someone else in need.

Charity doesn't continue
as your heart softens
with every story unfolded
instead of hardening
at the atrocity that is humanity.

Charity doesn't end
when you pass on,
as long as the word
dropped
is picked up by another.

Charity is the birth
of an idea,
one so strong
that it compels someone
to go out of their way
to help those in need
and not only because
the roles could be reversed.

With that simple knowledge
the world could be
incredibly different.

Charity isn't just an act.

It's a way of thinking
and unfortunately
not everyone is capable.

I like it, and I like the directions you went. I read it again, though, and intentionally left the word "charity" out of the poem itself, sometimes using "it" or "she" as a replacement, just to try it out to see if it was possible to make "Charity" a personality rather than just an action word. I think it'd be fun to play with this poem that way, and I suspect you might find that you'd come up with a few more descriptions. :))
