Rat King

by Amy Manning

imagine

twining matted tails
dirt and hair
crusted into the sticky folds
dull instinctual minds
forming one royal conscious
Plague swarms
not on the Horseman's steed
but on little pink feet
with little nubby toes
commanded by the disgusting monarch
it speaks from just inside one's ear
and sees using the eyes of its
rats, serfs in the sewer
a mythical accident

imagine

this abomination
filthily and elegantly
covertly
governing our world
with sharp teeth
and glowing eyes

keeping us safe

Author's Note: Wikipedia says: Rat kings are phenomena said to arise when a number of rats become intertwined at their tails, which become stuck together with blood, dirt, ice, excrement or simply knotted. The animals reputedly grow together while joined at the tails. Something interesting to look up would be a picture of this mythical creature. It sort of makes the poem a bit more sensical.

I've seen pictures before. It certainly adds an extra edge to an already fine piece of writing.
