Penny Dreadful

by Ben Evans

Penny dropped, bounce back up again
break silence with change
falling from sudden-stiff fingers
lie once again with the patience of a saint
and live once more through it all

Believe the time is coming
when you're wakened very suddenly
And don't stop to marvel at it all

Rub your palms together and conjure up
a lighter breath
then slowly, with disdain, lay it down

Shoot for the stars
for you're only coming down again
And cut short any dreams from the night
Wake once and fully
and never be a serving-man
nor shadow-silent winking with a paw

the whole thing is criminal
so might as well be sizzling
and the dew falls on the grasses unaware

Outstanding.

To me, the last line brings the reader to "the realization" that, despite the grandiosity of our thoughts and actions, we are tiny in the grander scheme of earthly processes.
