All I can do

by Jared Fladeland

I can change the world,
lift buildings up off their foundation.
I can destroy an entire army from the inside out
while reciting Shakespearean verse.

The potential exists that I simply jump high enough
off a skyscraper
and touch the moon.
I could even turn back time to the month of June.

I can solve foreign problems,
and unite the world in peace,
I can channel angels from heaven
and let the people on the ground know
that the only way to be happy is to smile.

But the one thing I cannot do,
no matter how hard I try
or how committed I may be;

I cannot make you forgive me.

And for that I would burn in hell.

The build-up to that brutal last line is flawless.

Quality. I'm sorry for your pain.
