The Hardest Thing To Do by Kate ZimmermanI broke down on the outskirts of town
Just pulled to the curb and let the tears roll down
I haven't cried
In the longest time
For you
We shook hands and we parted ways
I was wishing that you would ask me to stay
We said goodbye
Even though I tried
For you
You were my sun, a shelter from the rain
You were my joy, a refuge from the pain
I know you feel played for a fool
Out of all the things I did for you
Leaving was the hardest to do
I look back on the words that we screamed
Oh, that I doubted us and you doubted me
It wasn't fair
But we didn't care
That night
You tugged us right and I dragged us left
We fought through the world, all the length and the breadth
Our deepest love
Couldn't be enough
That night
You were my smile, the first thought in my head
You were my heart, the one who shared my bed
I know you feel played for a fool
Out of all the things I did for you
Leaving was the hardest to do
Girl, I know you hate me, and I'm not saying you're wrong
Just know I was thinking about you all along
