Heaven's Gates

by Kate Zimmerman

She's trying so hard to see the writing on the wall
Always looking for something that's never there at all
The only writing she reads is another page in her book of life
Cataloguing another day and another strife

And she starts to cry...
"Oh Lord, can You hear my prayers and see my tears fall down?
I'm listening so hard, but I can't hear You make a sound."
Looking up at the stained glass windows, her eyes meet His face
"Why do I feel so lost even when I'm in this place?"

She sits and begins to think about the life she's lived
Still so young, but all of her problems have grown so big
The relationship she once had now seems vague and nondescript
She had never thought it'd be like this

And she starts to cry...
"Oh Lord, can You hear my prayers and see my tears fall down?
I'm listening so hard, but I can't hear You make a sound."
Looking up at the stained glass windows, her eyes meet His face
"Why do I feel so lost even when I'm in this place?"

She gets up, collects her things, and walks down the stairs
The battle in her heart leaves her feeling so unprepared
She stops and whispers one last prayer before she says goodbye
"Help me remember that You are always by my side."

"Oh Lord, can You hear my prayers and see my tears fall down?
I'm listening so hard, but I can't hear You make a sound.
But just because I can't hear You doesn't mean You don't care
Help me to remember You promised always to be there."
