Love, Rinse, Repeat.

by Alison McKenzie

I watch my form fade
From the edges of another someone's world,
A flickering hologram struggling to shimmer
On withered plans.
I’ve been unplugged.

It’s so peculiar, to dissolve
Into the backdrop that was supposed to be
The last forever -
A bothersome character written
Out of the script.

Back on my own pages,
I wonder how it is
I ever managed to scrape
Enough of myself together
To make what was supposed to be
My last serious offer.

This does not escape peripheral vision -
The peace that’s returned
In the relative quiet
Of every conversation
We’re no longer having.

It’s a large and bulky bit
Of truth that’s been
Forced onto the map,
With no apparent way around it.

I am, of course, inclined to nudge myself along
Until I come out the other side of this,
Unencumbered and inspired to be
Back on my own turf
With no one to answer to
But the rain.

I’ve aged in my absence,
And it’s time for reinvention.

(How many episodes of love
Does one life grant?
Because I don’t think I’ve
Enough heart left
To divvy up the remnants.)

One thing is certain,
I sure have had some adventures
Playing the “Love” game,
But it’s time to put it away,
Too many of the pieces missing, now,
To have a proper go at it;
Considerably less valuable,
Yet no less dear,
For having been played
Nearly to death.

Author's Note: All I ever really wanted was someone nice to grow old with. Haha! And the Maitre D called "McKenzie, Pity Part for One...right this way please."

You'll get there. The thing about hearts, is that they work on their own time...so, even though YOU may feel that you've nothing left to offer, when the RIGHT person (in their totality, not just for a term) comes along, your heart will instinctively know what to do, in order to heal and share itself. In the meantime, in your party of one, you can chew with your mouth open or whatever other rude things we do in our alone time, haha! As always...a fabulous read, Ali!

Who cares if it's pity? I still found a lot of humor and integrity in this thing It was good stuff.

saddening. You will one day find the amazing love you deserve and it will be everything you hoped for and more. That's the thing about Karma it's like waiting for a check to deposit in your account which is taking painfully long but sometimes it goes in with 200% interest to boot. Good poem as always Ms. McKenzie you are the scratch to my literary itch.
