baseball life

by Mary Frances Spencer

nervous at bat
fast ball
decisions
or walk

try to catch the pop fly
run fast and step on each
base
around and around
sometimes stealing
or tagged out
cycling like innings
seasons take forever

outfield often boring
but necessary
every once in awhile
the grand slam
home running
cheers from the bench

as the sunshine falls into golden evening
game almost over
memories wear dusty knees
childhood moments crack metal
soar into another afternoon
at the park

Author's Note: My son is finishing the baseball season now. I really enjoy the whole experience of hanging at the park on a Saturday afternoon...(-: MFS
