The Contract

by Lori St. George

Its time to renegotiate
the contract.
“Please take a step back.”
I run my hands through my hair.
Over lines that
never used to be there.
“Yeah I am prepared.”

Her face that was once pink,
is now feathered ash.
And where life perched on high,
will soon be buried under the grass.
Who is to thank?
his Grace?
You laugh.
Not me.
Not ever again.

Said, “there is two sides to it,
I should get used to it.”
Does nothing at all,
but make me whispered and ruthless.

I put a hand on your cheek
while your lost in your sleeping.
Some stolen away place
where you are far off and dreaming.
This is the last time I will remember
the peace of that feeling.

So you can't cheat the cards,
and you can't beat the odds.
Let me deal for you now.
I bet my slashes and scars.
I will rip them all up
and sell out my blood.
Before him,
I will kneel
face down in the mud.

Can't stand the thought of
you losing again.
A quick nod and shiver
blunt shake of his hand.
And give this for you.
And I would do it again
and again,
and again.
“Its been paid in full.”
