Bracing for Tomorrow

by Alison McKenzie

Heavy air snakes its way into my lungs,
Forces the tissue to wrap ‘round it,
Like an infant, hungry to feel secure.

Most days I don’t mind breathing,
Especially when Wind only tousles my hair,
Makes me smile without thinking -

Today is different.

The bats swooped in,
Harbingers of shocking twists in the plot,
Their finely tuned sonar used
To locate the next destination.

I watched them trace the letters of my future,
The way a sparkler’s trail
Leaves embers hanging in the ethers.

They twinkled for a suspended moment

During which, the Wind, itself,
Attempted a breathless preservation,
Yet did not thwart,
Time’s ravenous disintegration

The echoes of those visions
Dance in endless revolutions
On the edges of my imagination

Having, once, been very nearly real.

Author's Note: Whenever bats show up, it isn't long before life takes a surprising turn...
