End of the World...Not

by Ken Harnisch

Oh well, another
End of the World Day
Came and went
And this time’s
Producer
Stood on a
New York City
Street and looked
At his watch
As if the
Damned thing
Had stopped at 5:59
Hoping if he just
Waited one
Minute more
We’d all be
Dust. All of
Us except
The Saved
Of course
And for three
Months or so
He’d been
Selling indulgences
Because, well,
As God’s agent
It was meet
And right so
To do

At 6:01
With the
Midtown crowds
Jeering lustily
Reverend Doomsday
Went home,
There to
Contemplate
The calendar
And no doubt
Announce
Some weeks
From now
That he’d
Miscalculated
And the real end is
Going to be
August the 25th
2017.

Honestly,
Sometimes
I think God holds
His head in
His hands
And thinks
He should
Have kept
The dinosaurs
Around
A few hundred
Million years
More.

Sure, some of them
Ate each other
But at least
They weren’t
Complete
And utter idiots
