The Fool That Never Knowed by JJ JohnsonSometimes it’s hard to tell
the difference between
what’s real and what’s pretend
Did you mean to flee the scene?
Was I just an accident
waiting for you to happen on me
Did you mean to spend the rent
when I told you love is free?
You promised me so many things
Not one was ever true
I’m always the fool who believes
what I would not do to you
It was supposed to be forever
From the day I shared your vow
Now our story of love is over
So what do I do now?
It all seems so ridiculous
I can’t pretend to know
This road don’t lead back to us
I don’t know where to go
Walking again the same old road
Was paved for the likes of me
with the gold of fools that never knowed
that nothing’s ever free
01/11/2011 Author's Note: I wrote this as a song some months back and it was a lot longer and just kinda sucked. So I put it away and was thinking about it for some reason, had the tune in my head and thought a few changes would fix it. Then after two hours of changing and cutting and editing, I kinda like how it came out. It's not really a poem, as I don't feel like i could stand and read it to an audience. Many of my poems have musical tunes in them, but this one seems strictly like a song lyric. It was more than a year after that I wrote the original piece, so it doesn't feel as real to me as most of my poems. I almost never write about the past, but it took me a long time to get to where I could reflect on it with a clear mind.
