Post Party Platitudes

by Richard Fish

Oh, what a night!
The weight of my eyelids pulls my head beneath my shoulders
As the taste of all the cigarettes I shouldn't have smoked
Remains ingrained on my lips.

I looked so much better 10 hours ago
With fresh fur and clean face.
Now I walk home
Shamefully
With lank hair and chewy denim.

I don't remember arguing with her boyfriend,
Or even the moves I tried to pull
Before he arrived.
So it's my mess in this bag
That I drag as a blunt metaphor
Back to some place
Where I can obscure its meaning.

There's a great twinge of dark humor in this. I also really like the tone you captured.

I agree with Gabe and Kat. This is a one of a kind.
