Sarah Randall, Fictively

by Ryan Narce

I had just let go of your arm when you turned & said,
‘I want a partner who isn't going to shy away from
the revelation that when you peel away all of the
layers of the onion, what you have is a peeled onion.’
i started, opened my mouth to respond, & you added quickly,
‘but peeled onions
are nothing to scoff at--billions of years culminated in this
intricate design.’
& we stood there for a long while, as if the words would somehow
change things, would drain the light out & put us to bed, letting us
build something else with other people

but it didn’t,& after a minute we caught sight of the restaurant &
slowly drew towards it, & you joked acidly that
some french onion soup
might do the trick
