The one that got away (Secret Sonnet) by Paganini Jones
Such a still airless morning
for a walk
but we went anyway,
having planned it days before.
We had studied the maps,
talked endlessly about who would take what kit,
considering just what was possible.
I was to provide rucksacks,
my camera,
food for us both
(maybe some plum crumble?)
and that sort of thing.
You said,
"No okra",
knowing I like Carribbean food.
You drove,
brought maps,
the dog,
and a crate of drink.
I took photos.
Nothing special or too alarming.
There was one
I
missed:
I think I was too slow
getting the camera out.
All you can see
is
your dog's
fuzzy snout!
05/10/2011 Author's Note: Yup. It looks nothing like a sonnet. Too many lines. No iambs. As far as I understand (and I'm still learning...) it follows the guidelines of a secret sonnet. It can be formatted differently, to give 14 lines of 10 syllables rhyming in English style and ending in a couplet. A true sonnet? probably not. Fun to try to write? Definitely! To see the version in true sonnet form go HERE Which do you prefer?
