Whitmanic Morning Task

by Lalo Kikiriki

O Poets! Arise!
Make the coffee,
turn on the Sopranos
(for inspiration)
see how
they blithely thrive.
In the shadow of death,
in the company of assassins,
they shout, “Marco Polo!”,
bake ziti.
They barbecue…
Oh minstrels!
Shall we not then
do likewise?

The History Channel
reminds us
the world is in flames.
Are we doomed to perform
The Mendelsohn Concerto?

Not yet! Arise!
Unpack the electric guitars
Sing out danger– remember?
Sing out warning!
And, if all else fails,
Sing out love…

Wonderfully written. I love the way this thing moves with the voice behind it. It's a very clear, engaging voice.
