Of Green Plants and Dryer Quarters by Michelle AngeliniOf Green Plants and Dryer Quarters
My mind slides down a palm leaf
into the lush spider plant jungle
barely missing stickers
on the row of Crown of Thorns
The dryer cycle ends
I insert another 50 cents
One is a Utah state quarter
I looked
Large leaves on vines draw my attention
there’s only one Mexican squash in sight
It’s not my vine, so I will let it be
to observe the green vegetable another day
Back on the brown leather couch
inspiration about life’s ordinary events
prompts the beginning of another poem
and I resist temptation to check the time
When I look up a blue-eyed Siamese-tabby
sits on the dividing wall between the two properties
The cat stays only a brief time after I talk
to her; she’s on her way to other feline responsibilities
Oversized fig leaves swing in the breeze; the green
fruit is elevated beyond my reach
One taste of ripe fig would be nice before birds eat the fruit
My mind tastes a ripe fig’s sweet juicy sweetness
