teach him me?

by Charlie Morgan

as he is headed to 5, a month away;
still being developmentally correct,
he says he's four, Piaget'd be proud.

yesterday he looked 5 and over as he scoured
the school yard for Easter eggs, today he does too.

yet i hide my pleasure in a smile and prayer.
will i see him at 20? will he see me in pictures,

only?

will i be soft, rubbery to the touch, or hot?
school will teach him biology, algebra, english.
who will teach him my heart? my dreams? my prayers?

i've started already. like a substitute teacher,
i know what the lesson-plan describes but i just
can't strap him down and beat him for the answer.

time is the best teacher, I am sure he will remember and is lucky to have your time.
