I Became...

by Ymelda Ramirez

When my feet graced the streets, I was vulnerable.
My eyes couldn't speak, my heart couldn't see.
I was a walking zombie, becoming prey to your abuse and hatred.

My legs were broken.
Through the pain, I inched forward, hoping for some healing.
I was tamed, trying to break free in search of peace to soothe my soul.

The daylight hours provided cover to the facade I created to please you.
Each smile struggled to cover the hurt inside me.
But, when the moon rose to it's highest peak,
It bought with it the sadness that consumed my heart.

But here I land,
Exactly where you found me.
I have returned scorned but stronger.
I stand on legs of steel, with a thankful heart for the destruction you caused.

Your goal was to break me.
To blind me with all the darkness you have to offer.
But you failed! You failed to see the light that burned inside me.
The light that opened my heart and consumed my thoughts.

I became that woman that He intended me to be.
My heart beats for Him,
My body aches for Him.
My soul has returned home.
I am me.
I am, finally, whole.
