Doesn't God Know

by Alison McKenzie

It stopped raining today
Just long enough for me to
Walk to the bakery
For an egg-salad sandwich
On bakery white bread.
I think, maybe,
God did it just for me.

But doesn’t God know
That I like the rain?

Later, after lunch,
There was a very skinny,
Very tall boy walking,
Hood up.
He had various parts
Sticking out –
His nose, his lips,
And very rosy cheeks.
He was soaked,
But it seemed to me
He liked the rain too.

When the sky is full of grey,
Clouds swollen
With God’s tears,
The sun is forced
To ride in the back for awhile.
Something about forcing that
Huge, burning orb to shush
Makes me feel better sometimes.

Doesn’t God know
That I like the rain?

Later, near quitting time,
There was a brown shaggy dog
Just sitting on the sidewalk,
Fur dripping,
Closed eyes pointed up to the drops.
He kept licking his nose.
I think he likes the rain, too.

I recently heard
That death forces us
To shimmer without limbs or skin
Or even bones.
I don’t mind being shushed to shimmer,
As long as there’s rain.

...mmm, something about rain, soft, drizzly, cool, warm, clear, sometimes acidy[even before the emergence o' man] the Lord's happy annnnd sad tears, eh? feel cool, refreshed...reminds of this a.m. a soft, silent rain.

This poem made me smile the whole way through. your write contains many beautiful variances on one topic. I loved the unexpected part with the happy to be wet dog. the end is a beautiful finish to an ordinary rainy day.

Just in time for Earth day, it's nice to read a positive poem on nature. It's been raining here all week, but that's to be expected here in April. It's easy to forget the life that springs forth from the rain. For some May is the most beutiful month of the year when all is blooming with colors, but some of us remember April gave it birth. I wish I was a dog so I could lick raindrops from my nose... jj

Alison, I like this poem so much. LA doesn't get enough rain...sigh. The flow of the words and the ideas and images throughout make a pleasant and calming pattern to follow. But, you know the sun is shining even when there is rain and yes, I love rain, too.
