Mother oh Mother by JJ JohnsonMother why do they execute you before sunset?
What crime did you commit to deserve a fate such as this?
Did you fail to provide for your children's needs and greeds
Or keep water from their mouths when their thirst went un-quenched?
Perhaps you forgot to feed their hunger for more and more
Maybe you left your children unprotected from each other
And when they journeyed into unknown lands did you forget them?
Did you not provide them with direction when they were lost?
But for you they would have no sunset to schedule your death
No rains would come to drink or water seeds to feed their greeds
The sun was yours to keep them warm and see your beauty all around
You held up the stars and the moon to guide them through darkness
Still they kill you with sticks broken from trees that you grew
Strung up with weeds to blow the answer in the wind
They melt the frozen waters to drowned the world in human sorrow
And if you're not dead by then they'll stone you when the sun set ends 04/20/2011 Author's Note: For Earth Day: our Mother needs us...

JJ's poem is a wonderful tribute as well as testimony of his deep feelings and emotions regarding the desecration of our Mother Earth. With Earth Day at hand this poem and discussion is very appropriate.

Once our reverence in our world is lost
Once wonder in our eyes no longer shines
Once boundless boundaries of awe are crossed
Once nature's grandeur we no longer find
Once hearts are turned to avarice and greed
Once blinded will we ever see the pain
Once want becomes the master over need
Once sold can our world e’er be free again
Will the answer find us weak and wanting
Will we pique our earth mother in her grace
Will we take the task as just too daunting
Will we trade our folly for her embrace
Take heed, O’ man while yet she gives us time
Take heed, lest last days clock begins to chime |
| Posted by Alison McKenzie on 04/23/11 at 04:05 PM I sometimes wonder if The Mother isn't bemused by our follies; how infinitely small our goals and plans that she should worry for her life. I strongly suspect we will kill ourselves long before she is marred beyond repair. Time is always always on our Mother's side, while time is a precious commodity to us. I don't worry so much for Earth - She is what She is and understands her limits. We, on the other hand, do not. |
