validation

by Charlie Morgan

the alley smells, reeks with after-life;
cardboard hotels' neon, firing off walls.

darkness covers my knees, shattered light
diffuses into a thousand shadows of worth.

in one is a day, a doubt, a desire. all
the earthly yearnings of mankind and all
in a weighted pile at my feet to drag.

will the travel be fruit-bearing? worthy.
i could walk away now, never try again.
first, i want. i need. i struggle for air.

a mirror is a sideshow of our true form;
essence is measured, meted-out accordingly,
i move further back in the shadows, cringe.

This, this is awesome: the alley smells, reeks with after-life; cardboard hotels' neon, firing off walls.
