Carl Sagan motioned to Kai, megrandson;
mentioning that he was one of billions.

to be nice to Carl, i grinned, knowing
that Carl was a scientist and smart;

but sorely lacking in visualization:
could not he see that Kai was One.

and his grins were stars themselves.
and if he didn't smile, the stars die.

Kai and Carl continued playing Connect 4.
when i left them, Kai was winning.
