Ending up with Mr. Right

by Maria Francesca

His mouth quirks
and his eyes shine
as he gets to work
on that sweet and fine
bit of fluff at the end of the bar -
as he ushers her into his car

and Cinderella watches once more
as her ship sails out
and she's left on the shore -

yeah, his suit is expensive
his hair is clean
his manners offensive
his eyes are mean

but she'd swallow her share of spite
if just one lonely night
could end with Mr. Right.

Each evening goes
pretty much the same
as the liquor flows
on a stream of names
that he's planning to forget
in a haze of cologne and sweat

Cinderella sees the way of things -
she could tell you how smartly rejection stings

and his car is expensive
his step is quick
his ego intensive
his skull is thick

but she closes her eyes up tight
and she prays that one lonely night
could end with Mr. Right.

Then, finally,
the die is cast
and Mr. Right is hers at last
after weeks of orchestration
and exhaustive preparation

Cinderella watches him just once more
as he lies there on her bedroom floor

and his wounds are defensive
his death is slow
the damage extensive -
a violent tableau

that fills her heart with light
because finally this night
ended up with Mr. Right.
